The $1,000 scholarship is named in memory of longtime California Employment Development Department employee Dwight Brydie, who was a committed and passionate advocate for youth. Winners of the scholarship must demonstrate leadership potential and/or provide positive role models for other youth, show the ability to make good choices, and who desire to improve their skills and abilities to succeed in the workplace.

Valerie Valdez, 17, is the senior class president for Hueneme High School where she is in charge of providing resources to students, organizing parent nights and informing her peers of graduation requirements. She also realizes the importance of helping others.
