Fairwind Community Youth Intermediate Sailing Program for 2011

The Fairwind Community Youth Intermediate Sailing Program is a unique
program developed by Fairwind Yacht Club (FYC), The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard
and Port Hueneme (BGCOP), and D.R. Horton.   The objective of the program is to teach
advanced sailing skills to youth in the local community.  The students will be drawn from the
members of The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme that have complete
the Seabridge Community Youth Sailing Program. The program will include a series of classes,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, in two hour segments starting after each
Beginning Sailing Session have been completed.  The specific schedule for the initial program is
provided below.  The program will utilize some or all of  FYC’s Capri 22 fleet of sailboats; named
Desert Wind, Sand, CompanionShip, and Sweet Deal.  There will be at least one FYC ASA
certified instructor or trainer onboard at any one time for the program.  This program is made
possible with the support of DR Horton.

 

LOCATION:  The intermediate sailing classes will be
held outside of Channel Islands Harbor.  The
sailboats will depart and return to the Small Boat
Marina.
SAILBOATS:  The intermediate program will utilize
Capri 22 sailboats.  
SAFETY:   The Capri 22 sailboats carry all Coast
Guard required safety equipment as well as
additional safety equipment required by FYC.  The
sailboats will be equipped with one Type III lifejacket
for each individual, one Type IV throw able floatation device, a boat hook, a horn, an anchor, day
and night visual distress signal devices, GPS, VHF radio, and a automatic and manual bailing
devices.  The Type III lifejackets will be selected to fit the individual; adult, juvenile, etc.
COMMUNICATION:  Instructors and staff members will have a VHF radio and cell phone will be
on-site at all times.
YOUTH:  The students to receive sailing instruction in the program will be members of the
BGCOP and will have completed the Seabridge  Community Youth Sailing Program.  In the
operation of the intermediate sailing program, BGCOP will select and arrange transport for the
students to the Small Boat Marina.  
SWIM TEST:  The students for this program are all graduates of the Seabridge Community Youth
Sailing Program and have all passed the required swim test.
INSTRUCTION:   The sailing instructor and assistants, FYC volunteers and BGCOP
volunteer/employees, will be responsible for the students during the session.  The students will be
escorted to and from the sailboats by FYC or BGCOP personnel.  The instruction will on the
water outside the harbor in Capri 22 sailboats.  There will be at least one instructor in the sailboat
with two to four students.  
INSURANCE:  The FYC Catalina sailboats and the youth sailing program are insured through
Gowrie, Barden, & Brett of Westbrook, CT.  The BGCOP personnel, students, and transportation
are insured through Laubacher Insurance Agency of Oxnard, CA.
Capri 22 Desert Wind LIABILITY WAIVER:  The parents will have signed a waiver authorizing their children to
participate, certifying that their children know how to swim, and releasing liability for BGCOP,
FYC, Ventura County, and DR Horton.

Instructor Biography
Michael Delaney, Sailing Instructor and Program Coordinator
Certifications:  First Aid, C.P.R., American Sailing Association
Keelboat Instructor (ASA201, ASA203, ASA204, & ASA205)
Michael has over 35 years of sailing experience and is
currently the Treasurer of Fairwind Yacht Club (FYC).  He is
also boat chief on FYC Boat Chief for Catalina 27, Catalina 22,
and Capri 14.2 sailboats.  He has taught sailing and certified
sailors at both UCI Sailing Association and FYC.  Michael has
developed and taught every  session of the Seabridge
Community Youth Sailing Program started in 2008.  Michael is
retired from the Southern California aerospace industry.  He
will be a volunteer instructor for the program.  He is also
presently a Sierra Club Hike Leader and Docent at Ronald
Reagan Presidential Library.
