Wine and art tour in Oxnard to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs

An eight-stop walking tour featuring wine tasting and art exhibits will highlight the 3rd Annual Wine & Art Trail to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme’s after-school music program.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oxnard and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme’s Young Professionals Network, the April 17 tour will offer wine, food and artists’ exhibits at the following locations: Heritage Square, Rancho Ventavo Cellars, Downtown Center for the Arts, Carnegie Museum, Alert Management, Tomas Café, The Kitchen, Sugar Beets and Fresh & Fabulous.

“This is a collaborative effort to create an event that highlights Oxnard’s wonderful downtown, and showcasing our local wineries, artists and cuisine, while benefitting a worthy cause — the music program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme,” said Tiffany Lopez, executive board member of the Young Professionals Network and event co-chair along with Kate Koslosky, a member of Oxnard Rotary.

Proceeds raised from the event will provide funds to continue the vocal and instrumental programs through purchasing instruments and hiring teachers.

“The Peace Thru Music program and Voices of Hope choir and orchestra are benefiting from this event,” explained Tony Barnes, director of the Peace Thru Music program for youths ages 6 to 18. The tour will conclude at Heritage Square with a performance by Voices of Hope, an after-school educational program and collaborative effort between the Rio School District and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

Peace Thru Music “addresses each individual learning style and we teach basic fundamentals of music and theory,” said Barnes, noting that students can learn how to play the guitar, drums and piano, among other instruments. “Building self-esteem is the aim and focus of our program.”

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the program is that “it also gives kids a place to go,” Barnes said.

The performance at the last stop on the tour will be followed by a raffle.

In 2010, “we raised $15,000, with all funds raised directly benefited the after school music program,” said Lopez, further emphasizing that this year’s event would not be possible without the support of sponsors including Alert Real Estate Services, Oxnard Downtown Management District, Oxnard Chamber, Heritage Square, City of Oxnard, EDCO and The Ventura County Star.

“This year, we hope to surpass last year’s goal and raise $20,000 with the support of additional sponsors and participants,” Lopez said.
