A seven-year study of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme shows the after-school program has improved the academic and personal outlook for the hundreds of children taking part, many of whom are at risk.

The California Lutheran University study, released Wednesday, was designed to quantify the impact the program has in the region as the club searches for money to implement new programs for low-income students.

Blaylock: Ways to fight ‘summer brain drain’

Posted in Uncategorized by BGCOP Staff on August 6, 2012

Research and experience show that a lack of mental stimulation over the summer results in children unlearning much of what they were taught during the school year.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme, we offer young people a safe, fun learning environment to spend their summer months, with staff and resources to fight the effects of “summer brain drain.”

This is a seasonal issue that causes millions of young people to lose months of accumulated knowledge. While the months without daily lessons are part of the problem, another contributing factor is that many young people are left alone for much of the summer, with little or no supervision to intellectually challenge them and constructively exercise their energies.
