“Boys & Girls Club art contest inspires Oxnard-area members”

Irma Santana, 11, fashioned a boot from wire, cardboard and newspapers.

For her effort, she was named a runner-up in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme fine arts exhibit.

“It’s great because I never made something like this before,” she said. “One day, I’d like to be an artist designing purses and shoes.”

Five judges spent 30 minutes last week assessing artwork from more than 100 students and selected a winner and a runner-up for each of 10 categories. The pieces have been on display at the Martin V. Smith Youth Center multipurpose room since Jan. 1.
