Youth of the Year: Paloma Guzman

Posted in Uncategorized by BGCOP Staff on March 8, 2013

??????????For the past five years, 17-year-old Paloma Guzman has thought of the Martin V. Smith Clubhouse as a second home. However, this year’s 2013 Youth of the Year says she wasn’t so sure of the Club when she first joined.
“I had lived in six states before moving to Oxnard with my mother and sister, and the idea of starting over in a new place was pretty scary,” Paloma said.
But once she became comfortable at the Club, she began to excel, especially with the Club’s Keystone group. For the last two years, Paloma has been president of Keystone, a leadership group that focuses on academic success, career preparation and community service.
The Youth of the Year competition recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club local organization, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.
“Paloma has such strong drive and ambition. She is a creative and intelligent young woman who represents our Clubs with great pride and enthusiasm,” said Tim Blaylock, BGCOP chief professional officer. “We are proud to consider her our Youth of the Year.”
Paloma has also been involved in the Club’s Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship program, where she won first place in the Dec. 13 NFTE Business Competition with her Blissful Cake Pops business plan.
She plans to attend college in the fall to study linguistics with an emphasis on American Sign Language and minor in business.
