“The 2013 National Keystone Conference in Atlanta, Ga., is an experience I will carry in my heart forever,” said Freddy Ruiz, an HHS Keystone member.

As a member of the Club’s Keystone group, Freddy and five other teens got to test their leadership skills and take part in one of the largest, most established youth leadership conferences. In late March, the six BGCOP teens attended the three-day National Keystone Conference and met up with more than 1,800 teens from around the country to discuss issues facing young people in their communities. Other BGCOP teens who attended the conference included Paloma Guzman, Jorge Perez, Amber Holmes and Joseline Vasquez, and their advisors, LaCresha McManus and Cris Lejano.

The teens and their advisors all said the conference was amazing!

– “This was my first time EVER on an airplane and I’m glad the Club gave me the chance to go because it was so AMAZING!” said Joseline Vasquez, PH Keystone Club.

– “I was the ONLY veteran Keystoner going to conference and it just allowed me to appreciate all of the opportunities the Club has made available to me over the years…I got to reconnect with lots of friends I’ve made while being a Keystone member and introduce them to the rest of my friends from home,” said Paloma Guzman, MVS Keystone president.

– “I became a National Reporter for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America through! I’m looking forward to the future with my Keystone Family,” said Amber Holmes, HHS Keystone president.

During the conference, teens heard from a wide array of motivational speakers and entertainers, including musical performances by recording artist and actress Jordin Sparks, hip hop recording artist B.o.B and pop group OMG Girlz. Motivational sessions featured rap and hip hop pioneers Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C., Doug. E. Fresh and DJ Spinderella of Salt-n-Pepa, professional skateboarder Preston Pollard and WWE wrestler and actress Eve Torres.

Teens participated in interactive workshops on everything from bullying prevention, financial literacy and college preparedness to robotics, golf and movie making.

BGCOP advisor McManus said her group enjoyed the workshops and motivational speakers and really grew as individuals. “Our BGCOP teens gained confidence to be comfortable with whom they are becoming. They also became even better leaders for our organization and community. Most importantly, they gained a new appreciation for what our Club has to offer and an understanding that the choices they make NOW will indeed affect their future.”

To attend the conference, teens need to maintain a 3.0 GPA, attend Keystone meetings regularly, participate in three or more other BGCA programs and be present to work at Keystone events throughout the year. The Keystone Club is a teen leadership group that focuses on leadership development through community service projects.
