Casino night to raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs

“The All in for the Kids Casino Night will feature blackjack, craps and roulette, as well as a pay-per-view boxing match, all to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

The event will be Sept. 14 at the Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme. Doors open at 5 p.m.

“We hope to raise $30,000 with the help of sponsorships from businesses, in addition to ticket sales,” said Tim Blaylock, chief professional officer.

Tickets cost $65 per person in advance or $75 at the door. Guests must be at least 21 to attend.

Each ticket includes three-card poker and other games played with “funny money,” as well as appetizers, a no-host bar and the broadcast of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Saul “Canelo” Alvarez boxing match.

Attendees can also vie for prizes, including a Las Vegas trip for two adults, gift baskets and gift cards.

“If we do not receive the funding that we need to support our programs we must make the appropriate cuts to stay alive,” Blaylock said. “So please help us if you can. The Boys & Girls Club belongs to the community.”

Established for more than six decades, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme has 18 locations and serves 9,000 youths ages 6 to 18.

“We continue to provide a low membership fee of just $20 per year,” Blaylock said.

He said the club never turns away anyone because of an inability to pay, and that it does cost about $500 per child a year.

Now, more than ever, these fundraising events are crucial, said Sean Leonard, president of the club’s board of directors.

“We serve 9,000 of the most vulnerable kids; many would fall through the cracks if not for our club,” Leonard said. “With the economy the way it is, corporate and individual giving are down. We need the community support to keep our doors open.”

Previous fundraisers have supported efforts including the club’s stand-alone Teen Center, which opened in Oxnard in April.

“We were able to open due to a variety of fundraising successes,” Blaylock said. “However, we need to meet all of our goals to just maintain the programs and services that we currently have.”

Leaders at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme said they believe that every young person has the potential to be great.

“Our mission is to inspire and enable all youth, especially those who needs us most, to realize their full potential, as productive, responsible and caring citizens,” he said. “Fulfilling our mission would not be possible without people who deeply believe in the success of our community’s youth.”
