BGCOP Celebrates Club Alumni with New Hall of Fame

At last month’s Kids Auction, the Club honored three esteemed Club alums by inducting them into the newly created Hall of Fame. The honorees include Judge Manuel Covarrubias, former Oxnard City Councilman Andres Herrera and Freddy Saldana, the first Oxnard Club member in 1954.

The Hall of Fame is located at the 7th street Clubhouse in a prominent area so today’s Club members can be inspired by each honored alumni’s contributions every day.

“We are very proud of our alumni and their accomplishments. Our first three inductees are remarkable men and good role models for our members,” said Tim Blaylock, BGCOP Chief Professional Officer. “When we meet alumni out in the community, we’re always so impressed and proud of the adults that they have become.”

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Manuel Covarrubias was a member of the Oxnard Boy’s Club on 7th Street from approximately 1958 to1965. Manuel received his law degree from Loyola Law School in 1977. He worked as an attorney for Channel Islands Legal Services and also was in private practice. He was appointed a Superior Court judge in 2002, and has served in Juvenile Court (Delinquency) since 2005. In 2012, he became a presiding Juvenile Court Judge.

Bay Area resident Freddy Saldana was the first member of the Oxnard Boys Club when it opened in 1954. Freddy was a member from 1954 to 1963. A U.S. Army veteran, he attended California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, graduating with a degree in electronic and electrical engineering. He worked with International Business Machines (IBM) in San Jose for 36 years in various capacities including development programmer, programming manager, programming planner and product manager. In 2009, he retired. He gives back to his community some of the benefits that he received from the Boy’s Club staff by coaching youth football for the past 32 years. Saldana read the Boys Club Code at the dedication ceremony on July 11, 1954. His first paid job was at the Club, and he was “Boy of the Year” in 1961.

Former Oxnard City Councilmember and mayor pro tem Andres Herrera, owner of HAV & Associates, joined the Oxnard Boy’s Club in 1955. Andres is a graduate of UCLA, where he was a three-year starter as a defensive back in football. He built a career as an executive manager for Northrop Corporation and the National Broadcasting Company. A BGCOP supporter and advocate, he is active in the community, serving on many boards and was on the city council for 12 years. He was a round table representative to the Bush and Obama administrations on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). He is a member of the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame and received the leadership award by El Concilio del Condado de Ventura.

The Club invites all its former members and alumni from other Clubs who are living in Oxnard or Port Hueneme to join its alumni network. The network enables alumni to connect with each other –to build new friendships or rekindle old ones –and to positively impact today’s Club members. Register for the alumni network (  or
