Underwater robotics program promotes deep learning

Club members are building underwater robots in an amazing partnership program called SeaPerch with the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division.

Beginning in May, Club members, ages 10-12, meet twice a week, for six weeks and work in small groups with SeaPerch instructors (comprised of engineers and logisticians from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division) to build underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles. The instruction follows a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. Throughout the hands-on project, students learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.

Offered at the Martin V. Smith Clubhouse, the program aims to stimulate students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math. By working with the engineers and other technical personnel, the students are also getting introduced to science and technical career options.
