It was a day of community and giving back as BGCs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme celebrated in a big way!

Day for Kids is an annual event dedicated to spending meaningful time with children and this year was no different! I love Day for Kids at our Club because it’s a day when I can mix my immediate family with my Club family and have fun doing it.

In 2014, Day for Kids was awesome! At our event, we had 30-plus nonprofit agencies providing services to families in our community. We had a full stocked arts-and-crafts section with face painting, sidewalk chalk and balloon animals. Among the many things taking place were pony rides, a petting zoo, Gamez on Wheelz (a mobile video game truck), a rock climbing wall, monkey jumps and a bunch of jolly jumpers that everyone enjoyed.

We also had food vendors such as Domino’s Pizza, Jersey Mike’s, Panda Express and Kona Ice that supported our event. Last, but not least, the stage entertainment kept parents busy as their kids enjoyed all of the interactive activities. We had a Polynesian Floor Show, The Reptile Family, DJ Wiz Kid from Q-104.7 and our very own Voices of Hope Choir. Important dignitaries also came out to enjoy the day’s festivities.

But what I love most about Day for Kids is that it’s free! Families didn’t have worry about the cost of activities or the show. In Oxnard, free events are appreciated.

The best part about my day was being able to volunteer with the rest of my Keystone family. This is the one event where we are able to give back to the Club that has given so much to us. Yes! We get to enjoy the event, but we also choose to help where we were needed.

This year, we had nearly 70 adult volunteers from the U.S. Navy. That’s 70 men and women who lay their lives on the line for our country every day. I was happy to work with them because their positive vibes sure did show. It was a reflection of the great partnership our Club has with Military Forces.

Over all, the day was a huge success for our Club. It was amazing to see the thousands of people who decided to wake up that morning and take part in Day for Kids. It reminds me that the community should come together more often to celebrate families and showed me that my community believes in my Club. During Day for Kids, we prove to our communities that the Boys & Girls Clubs offer hope and guidance for Great Futures!
