“This annual event attracts civic and business leaders from Ventura and LA Counties and sells out every year. We are looking forward to another great tournament benefitting our greatest asset: our youth,” said Tim Blaylock, Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.
Entry fee to the tournament is $295 per player or $1180 per team. The registration fee gives each player access to green fees, cart, lunch, contests and an awards banquet, held after the tournament.
Sponsorship packages are available, ranging from $250-$10,000. For information on how you can get involved please go to http://bgcop.org/news/events/golf.htm or contact Meggan McCarthy at 815-4959 ext. 204 or mmccarthy@bgcop.org.

Hueneme Pilot – Fire, police units raise gloves, funds

Hueneme Pilot
From staff reports
Ventura County firefighters proved they could fight more than fires during the
first Battle of the Badges charity boxing challenge Dec. 5, but the real winner
was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.
The event, held at Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme, raised about $20,000
for the organization by pitting the Ventura County Fire Department against the
Ventura County Sheriff’s Department in 11 matches billed as Guns vs. Hoses.
The firefighters, after falling behind early, rallied to win, 7 bouts to 4.
“It was spectacular,” said firefighter Jason Hodge, one of the coordinators of the
event. “It was a sold-out house, we had some really great fights, and we raised a
lot of money. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.”
Hodge said the money was still being tallied and bills paid but expected to net
around $20,000, more than twice the original goal. “We could have raised even
more if we had known what we were doing,” Hodge joked.
The firefighter said the Boys & Girls Club was selected because “there is a
natural nexus between what the Boys & Girls Clubs do and what we do in law
enforcement and fire education. (The club) empowers children to take care of
themselves and become responsible adults, better citizens. They also have a
boxing program.”
A second event is expected, but Hodge said he was uncertain when it would be.
This year’s event conflicted with Christmas season and an earlier schedule would
occur during fire season. He said February or March of 2011 might be the best
time.
The fights were state-sanctioned, which means each of the fighters had to be
state-approved for the fight and each has an official won-loss record.
“It was just fantastic that we had 22 people standing in the ring, taking punches
and fighting for these kids,” Hodge said. “There were no losers. It was a
phenomenal effort.”
